Scenic Basing - Snow

The WolfGuard are almost done. The only thing left for them is to be based. Pictures of them should be up within the week if all goes well.

In the mean time I will be showing off one of the snow bases I made. This base will be used for an HQ unit so it needed to stand out a little from the others. The idea was to have the unit standing up high watching over the battlefield. The best way for this would be if he was up on a rock of cliff edge.

I started out by gluing a piece of bark to the base. Make sure the bark has dried out thoroughly first (I left mine on top of an AGA for a couple of days. An airing cupboard will work fine too).

It was then primed black. It took a couple of coats as it really does absorb the paint.

It was then heavily drybrushed with a multitude of greys. Getting lighter in colour and in drybrushing each time.

At this point it now looks like a rock and you are free to finish the base however you wish. Since I am going with a snow theme for the Space Wolves, I decided to mix up some homemade snow and apply it to the base along with some gravel and grass flock.

The snow was made by mixing PVA Glue, Bicarbonate of Soda, White Paint and a little water.

In the end, the base turned out looking like this:

Eldar Reinforcements

So I was back over in the UK last week and picked up some Eldar from an old school friend. I got quite the haul for pretty cheap. Here's what I got:

Wolf Guard: Part 1

So I've kept saying this post was coming but it never actually did. Well it has now! It's not as detailed as I'd have liked it to be but due to some other issues I wasn't able to spend as much time on these as I had hoped in the last few weeks.

Just so you know, these step by step images may jump from model to model as I often get carried away when painting and forget to take the pictures :P

So let's just jump straight in. I first started by priming each of the models in black. You'll notice that one of the models is Forgeworld's Tyberos The Red Wake. He shall be joining the Wolf Guard squad and will no longer be representing for the Carcharodons.

After this I tried basecoating with pure Necron Abyss (the two models on the left) and a watered down variant (the model on the right) The pure coat turned out to be far too dark and had a gloss finish to it which I really wasn't wanting. The watered down mix was better but still far too dark for what I was looking for.

I ended up going for a much lighter basecoat and opted for a slightly watered down Shadow Grey. The watering down of this wasn't to change the colour this time, but to just make it apply easier and go that little further.

The next step was to base coat the other sections and apply the first coat of Space Wolf Grey. The teeth, runes, crux, fur and any gold parts were based with Scorched Brown. The weapon was based with Boltgun metal and the shoulders, Chaos Black. The eyes were done with Iyanden Darksun.

Another thin coat of Space Wolf Grey was applied to the armour.
The crux, teeth, claws and runes were then painted with Bleached Bone and washed with Devlan Mud to bring out the detail.
The fur was heavily dry brushed with Snakebite leather followed by a lighter drybrush of Bubonic Brown towards the edges. The extreme edges were then highlighted with Bleached Bone and Skull White. Devlan Mud was then washed over the top to tone down the brightness of the highlights and to add a little depth.
The gold sections (along with the eyes) were painted with Shining Gold and the embedded runes were filled with a very watered down mix of Dark Angels Green (around 4:1 water to paint).
The Shoulders were done with Codex Grey.

So as you can see it's progressing along quite well. The picture above is nearing the final stages and just needs tidying up with a final highlight and edging applied to the armour plates and the smaller details painted on.

No New Posts...Sorry

Just a quick update to explain why the Sunday post didn't appear as promised.

The short version is that I've been too busy. I'm working a strange shift at the moment which doesn't leave me with much spare time, and due to the shift transition I didn't really get a weekend either.

The good news is that I have made a small start on the Wolf Guard. I've got them primed and base-coated and I'm currently starting to work on base-coating the fur and gold sections.
My first proper day off in ages will be this Saturday, so I should hopefully be able to get something done then.

New Deliveries

So the move has been and gone and I am now in my new house, albeit surrounded by boxes still. I haven't yet got round to setting up a painting station, but that should hopefully be sorted in the next few days.

During this time I've had a few deliveries turn up. The first of which was my Wraithguard that I picked up on the cheap from eBay. He'll be getting stripped shortly.

The next thing that turned up at the door is my KR Multicase that showed up just in time for moving house. This thing is fantastic. For €30 you get a nice rigid box that will be able to survive some decent knocks and drops as well as whatever foam tray loadout you want. I opted for 1 full tray and 2 half trays for troops, which allows me to take 80 troop models. The rest was a pluck foam section for my vehicles and Monstrous Creatures.

Fire Prism: Part 1

So I mentioned yesterday that I picked up a Fire Prism for my Eldar Iyanden army. I made a small start on it over the weekend so thought I'd stick up a few pictures.

The first thing I did was to prime the top part of the model white. This was used on any part of the model that I intended to colour yellow eventually. This was done on sprue to make handling easier.

I then painted the recesses between the armour plates a darker shade to what will be on the armour surrounding them. In this instance that was black (for the blue sections) and Snakebite Leather (for the yellow sections)

Doesn't need to be too neat at this point.

The next step was to apply Asurmen Blue wash to the panels that will be getting painted blue. I find that this gives a reasonable undercoat for applying blue colour too afterwards. It's also incredibly quick to do and gives a nice covering.

Once the wash had dried I applied a coat of Regal Blue over the top. This will be the foundation for the blue panels. All of the blending will start from this and then get progressively lighter towards the outer edges of the tank.

You can still see some of the brush strokes left over from the wash, however, these will fade with successive highlights.

I intend to completely finish the blue sections before starting on the yellow so that I don't get any of the blue paint onto a finished yellow section.

Part 2 of this will show how I blend through the blues to achieve a nice gradual fade from top to bottom.

Unfortunately, there may not be another post in the coming days as I will be incredibly busy moving house. The good news is that once I'm all set up, I'll have my own dedicated painting room so expect the rest of the tank updates along with the wolf guard to come shortly after.

New Toys

I've been doing a lot of painting over the past few days. I've finished off my Chaos Terminator Lord, Chaos Lord and Chaos Sorcerer (pics coming once they're based). I've also started work on some new goodies that I picked up on the weekend for my new army.

Both of these will be painted up in Iyanden colours and added to the army. The Warlocks will be run as Spiritseers to guide my legion of Wraithguard and Wraitlords. The main annoyance I'm finding with this is that the Wraithguard are incredibly expensive for single models, especially when I need a lot of them. The good thing is that I'm in no hurry to get this army finished and will just try and pick them up cheap on eBay whenever I spy a bargain.

Speaking of which, I just nabbed this little guy for a fiver!

I've got the models and they're all already assembled (minus their shields for easy painting). Unfortunately I may not be able to start on them as soon as intended as I've got to move house within the next few days so will be very busy for the next couple of weeks.

What I Have Planned

I haven't actually done any painting in the last week but I thought I would update you on what I've got coming up in the near future.

One of my first jobs will be to properly test out my Crimson Fist scheme on the following model:

Pedro Kantor

I thought it seemed apt for a Crimson Fist scheme. I will start on this within the week, so pictures incoming shortly.

I also have the possibility of painting up the following two projects.

Dreadfleet

Space Wolves

My friend got Dreadfleet for Christmas, so there will be a joint effort of painting that up with a couple of others.

He is also going to be starting a brand new Space Wolves army on Monday, so I may be commissioned in to paint those. It'll be a reasonable big job since it will be a 1750 point army. Not certain on when either of those will start though.

My last bit of news is that I wanted something non-40k to paint, and I really liked the look of the Warmachine/Hordes miniatures on display in my local gaming store. So, on Monday I will likely be picking up the beginnings of what may turn into my Protectorate of Menoth army.

So, there you have it. Quite a lot of stuff coming up in the following weeks. It'll all be shown on here, so keep checking back now and then :)

Crimson Fist Prototype

So I got bored last weekend so I took a look through my friend's Crimson Fists. He'd opted for a very basic Blue and Red paint scheme, with no detailing, highlighting or overall depth.
So I grabbed one of his unpainted terminators and (very) quickly painted up a prototype for what I think would look better (If I were to repaint his army).

Please bear in mind that this entire model took less than an hour to do from start to finish, so everything is very rough and some sections aren't even painted yet. The entire reason for this was to just portray the overall look I was going for.

The way I achieved this was to prime the model in black, and then basecoat each of the armour plates in a 1:1 mix of Mordian Blue and Chaos Black. I then washed the entire model with Badab Black. What you're aiming for at this point is for a very dark blue covering.
I then edge highlighted with pure Mordian Blue, and after this a thinner edge of Regal Blue mixed with a touch of Skull White to brighten it up a little.

The fists were based with Red Gore and then washed lightly with Badab Black in the recesses. A final highlight of Blood red was used to highlight.

Like I said, it's very rough, but good enough to get an idea of what I would make them look like.

I've also been playing around with an idea I saw on Dakka Dakka for IG bases. The idea is to make it look like the models are in the trenches and stood on duck boards (made from coffee stirrers). I'm not 100% happy with the boards yet, but you get the general idea.

Progress So Far...

So I thought I would give you a quick update on how my current projects are going. I'm slowly working on 3 different models at the moment. All of them are for my own Chaos Army. They're are all approaching the finishing point, but have a few smaller details to be added as well as tidying up some of the lines.

I'll be basing them fairly soon too although I haven't decided what kind of bases they'll be on yet.

Khorne Juggernaught

I love him, he's just so chunky :) He'll be staying mostly black, but will have a red daemonic glow coming from underneath each of the armour plates....or at least that is the plan. His rider will be painted in my standard Berzerker theme.

I've also done a quick prototype of a paint scheme for my friends Crimson Fist Space Marines. I'll have the pictures ready soon and will update the Blog later on today or at some point tomorrow.

Away From Home

So about a week or two ago we ran out of gas at my house and we won't be able to get a delivery until the new year. So, instead of sitting in the cold I picked up some of my stuff and just moved into my girlfriends place temporarily.

So, for the past week, my painting station has been a hijacked corner of her kitchen table.

You can also see my magnifier lamp which I've started using for some of the more detailed pieces.

I didn't want to take a huge amount of my models with me so I just grabbed a couple of ones that I'll be using to showcase. The main one that I've been working on is my Chaos Terminator Lord (old version).

He's very far from being done, but this is his current progress:

As you can see he's not nearly finished yet, but I hope you can sort of see where he is headed. I've opted for a light grey cloak to contrast against the red. The dark grey that you see now will be the upper shadows.

You've also probably noticed that he's missing an arm. Well, that's because I removed it to have a go at painting it up as a power weapon with lightning effect. Currently it only has the background glow of the lightning strike. The lightning will be added later.

Well that's all for the moment. I'll be finishing this model later on this week as well as starting on either Abaddon or the Avatar.

Offering Commission Work

Since starting this blog, I've had a few people poke me and ask if I'd be interested in painting some of their miniatures for them. So, I've created a new page which will give you the details on services and prices that I offer.

New Brushes

I have had my old brushes for quite some time now, but unfortunately they have come to the end of their days.

So, I got a friend who was over in England to pick me up 3 new brushes.

I decided to move away from the Citadel brushes and onto something a little nicer. The first of which is a No. 3 Red Sable

This will be my main brush for base-coating and most of the larger detail sections.

These next two are the ones I'm most looking forward to using. Both of them are Rotmarder-Kolinsky brushes. I had been recommended these by a couple of friends and had heard only good things when looking around for brush options.

I'll be using the 0 for the majority of the detail on my models (armour trims, blending, highlighting etc.) The 3/0 will be used exclusively for the smallest possible details (eyes, teeth, runes, any freehand work etc.)

Both of these are triangle brushes which should be interesting as I'm used to round handles. They also stop me from holding the brush as close to the bristles as I'm used to.

My first project with the new brushes will be something that turned up this morning. My first foray into fine cast and eldar...

Not sure when I'll be starting this, but I've got a lot of free time coming up so I imagine it won't be too far off.

Making a Cobblestone Base

Running a couple of AoBR dreads in my army means that they come with the plain 60mm bases. Compared to the proper dreadnought bases, these are pretty boring to say the least. So I decided to make something up myself. I took my inspiration for this from a similar idea on the Dakka Dakka forums. However, instead of going for a cracked road look, I went for cobblestone/boulders.

You'll need:

60mm Plain Base
Badab Black Wash
Chaos Black Paint
Codex Grey Paint
Egg Shells
Polyfilla (or any other putty)
PVA Glue
Super Glue
Water

Before you start, bake the egg shells in the over for around 10 mins. This will dry them out nicely.
Now that you've done that, first thing to do is spread some of the polyfilla onto the top of the base.

Crack the shells into medium sized pieces and then super glue the pieces onto the base.

Once this has dried a little, mix up some PVA and Water and brush it over the top of the base. Leave this to dry completely and then base coat the entire thing in Chaos Black.
After this heavily drybrush the base with a 2:1 mix of Codex Gray and Chaos Black. All that is left at this point is to apply a wash of Badab Black.

Once dry, it should look something like this:

It took less than an hour from start to finish (with the help from a desk lamp for speeding up the drying)

Also this week, my magnets turned up eventually.

So once I have some free time I shall be magnitizing the arms of my dreadnoughts. They'll also be used for the arms of my terminators...once I buy them.

Painting Khorne Berzerkers

So I decided to get my Khorne Berzerker squad up to a reasonable gaming standard of painting. The pictures below are all of different models as I forgot to take step by step photo's until too late.

The first step is priming them. I used Chaos Black as it was all I had to hand at the time. However Codex Grey would actually work better for the way in which I paint them.

Once they're primed, I basecoat the entire model in a 1:1 mix of Mechrite Red and Water. Once dried I wash the model with Badab Black. This gives a little depth to the model by shading those recesses and indents.

After this I use a slightly watered down mix of Gore Red to each of the armour pieces.

The next step is to highlight some of the armour with Blood Red. I only do this on the pieces that are in direct exposure to light as I prefer my Khorne to be darker that the GW suggested paint scheme.

I also add some of the more basic details at this point too. Dwarf Bronze is added to all of the trim, followed by Shining Gold. I then paint the metal bits with Boltgun Metal folled by a final highlight of Shining Silver.

Now this isn't finished yet, but it's more than ready to be gamed with. Once I have time I shall fully finish it by cleaning up some of the miss-strokes, applying a black wash to the metal parts, adding some final highlights, penning in the eyes and last but not least, basing it.

Battle Report Part 1

So here it is at last. The first half of Monday's Battle Report. Only have half of it since due to prior arrangements we only got to turn 3 of 5.

We set up in opposite corners of the board, a capture point in each and one more in the very centre. Due to not having any proper terrain, we improvised!

I won the roll to go first, so I set up an aggressive start, taking the middle point.

My Plague's and Defiler stand guard over the point in my corner.

A few turns in and my Defiler and Obliterators reduced the Warrior squad down to 3 members. Still very dangerous though, they proceeded to pop one of my Rhino's and assault the 10 marines within. Their Bonesword's made short work of the marines, and they moved on to my Obliterators.

This didn't go as bad, the Obliterators managed to finish off the warriors, but took some heavy losses in the process - 2 Oblits down.

One of my Dreads rolled a 6 and charged headlong into a pack of gaunts. Thankfully, without rending, they weren't able to get through the armour and the dread took them all out before being downed by the Zoanthropes.

My other Dread made a run for the woods.

This was working really well until Dan's Genestealers came in from reserve and are currently sneaking up behind him.

Anyway, that's how things stand as of now. We will be picking things up again soon.

In other news I've been doing a fair bit of painting today and I'll be sticking up some pictures hopefully tomorrow.

Sickness 40k

Sorry for no entries recently. Went away for a few days for my girlfriends birthday. Ended up spending it crouched over a toilet throwing up.

The Battle Report from Monday is still coming, I just haven't had the time to upload all of the pictures yet. What I can do in the mean time is show you my new aquisition.

Got it from a friend who didn't want it any more. It's missing the heavy bolter turret from the front, but I can pick one of those up from eBay. I'll also be chaing most of the silver to gold to coincide with my Khorne theme that I will be doing on the dread.

The Winner Is...

Eldar!

I took a good look round at some of the other paint jobs for the two armies short-listed (Eldar and Tau), and came to the conclusion that Eldar would be more fun to paint.

So, not wanting to waste any time, I managed to pick myself up a bargain on eBay. Nabbed myself one of these for less than half the retail price.

It's the finecast version too and brand new in box. This will be my first opportunity to work with finecast resin. From what I've seen so far, I really like the extra detail it provides, but it tends to feel very brittle and fragile. I'll provide a proper review of what I thought of it once the model turns up.

Also decided on the colour scheme I'll be using for my Eldar models. I wanted something massively contrasting to the dark colours of my Black Legion army, but not garishly over the top. I looked through each of the major Craftworld colour schemes and decided upon Iyanden.

I aim to change it a little bit though as I want a very clear indicator of rank and seniority between same model units. More details on that will revealed at a later point (once I decide on it)

Stripping Metal Models

I can't remember if I mentioned the fact that I was given five already painted obliterators or not. However, they were painted pretty bad and were also using a different colour scheme to my Black Legion army. The great thing about oblits is that they're metal models, which makes stripping them a breeze.

Dan, over at tzarkahn40k, recommended Dettol as the best way to strip them. However, I don't have any Dettol in the house, so I improvised. What I did have was a canister of petrol. Poured some of this into a cup, popped in the oblits, and 24 hours later (with a little help from an old toothbrush) they now look like this:

Not perfect, but for 2 minutes of scrubbing, they're easily good enough for what I need

Okay, so petrol has an obvious downside - paint will not stick to the model if there's any trace of the petrol left on it. That's fine though, a good soak in some warm soapy water quickly removes it all and they're ready for assembling.

All that's left for these now is to prime them in black and they're ready to wait in-line for a proper paint job.

Possible New Army

Quick update that I forgot to mention earlier. I'm contemplating starting a second army. This is mainly for painting reasons as I'm a little bored of my Black legion army.

Now the contenders for this new army are either Eldar or Tau.

Eldar Vs Tau

I've always liked the idea of having a pure ranged Tau army, but the sleek lines and surfaces of the Eldar are really tempting me to try my hand at painting them. Any thoughts?

Whatever happens, I'll be building that army very slowly since I'll still be focusing on the CSMs. I'll probably just pick up the odd model on eBay whenever I spy a bargain.

Monday List

So getting a little closer to my first 1750 game against my house mate's Tyranid army. I've been sat this morning trying to decide on a potential list.

I'm obviously going to be avoiding close combat as assaulting into even his weakest troops when there's a Venomthrope nearby is painful. Also, Shadow in the Warp forces my psykers at least 12" away from any of his synapse creatures. This means that the Khorne Berzerkers will be on the bench for this game and I'll be trying to go for something with a little more range.

Now I know he reads this so I will not be posting upgrades or numbers. Also this is a first draft that took me about 15 minutes to put together so it is likely to change a lot before Monday.

The list I'm currently thinking of using is this:

Painting and Bitz

Not a huge amount happened since last post. Still waiting on some magnets to arrive as well as two Assault on Black Reach Dreads for conversion. Hopefully they'll be here this week, or early next week. Also waiting on my codex to turn up as I'm still using the one from the work library at the moment.

One thing that did turn up this morning was a sprue of possessed. It was just sat on my desk when I got into the office this morning. A nice present from one of my colleagues that didn't need it.

The possessed themselves are pretty terrible, but the bitz on the sprue are some of the best Chaos have to offer. Will make for some great conversions.

One thing I did get round to doing was priming the Defiler and Dreadnought.

The Dreadnought will be the first time I've worked on a grey primer but I'm wanting to try out something new with the Khorne paint scheme, so fingers crossed it will turn out well.

My on-going painting project is my Chaos Sorcerer.

I'm having a lot of fun with this one. It was a lot more detail and features than the standard power armour guys I'm used to painting. He's still early on in the painting process but I already like how he is turning out.

Got a game against my house mate's Tyranid army on Monday, so will be posting a prospective list for that in the coming days. I'll leave you with a picture of his army so far:

Other Realms Game

So just got back from a game with some friends over at my local gaming store. Was matched up against Dan's Imperial Guard.

Unfortunately the game didn't end as we ran out of time half way through the 4th turn.

This is the army I went with in the end:

1750 Army

The end result was undecided due to the early finish. However, points wise I didn't come out to well. Some very unlucky rolls meant the bulk of my ranged anti-mech never made it out of reserve as well as both of my obliterators dying before being able to do anything worth while (seriously, three 1's in a row on 2+ saves)

My new Dreadnought was taking out during the first turn so I didn't get to see him do anything, and the Defiler followed shortly after (at least he managed to take out a handful of guardsmen with him).

My Plague marines deployed straight onto the objective:

They were soon surrounded but were able to weather the onslaught to hold the point until the end.

The Daemon Prince managed to cripple one of the tanks and take out another few infantry models before finally succumbing to the focus fire of many guns. My other HQ (Chaos Lord) only made it into combat once before his Daemon Weapon rebelled and smacked himself in the face. Useless.

A good game overall. Just wished we'd had a chance to finish it. Next time I'll probably host it at my own place or at work so we've got all the time we need.

Chaosing it up

Still not been back home yet, so no pictures of my full army yet. What I have done though is put a few little additions onto my Dreadnought.

I'm not a huge fan of the overly spikey conversions I've seen elsewhere so I've tried to keep it as minimal as possible. The idea is to convey the chaos in the colour scheme more than in the modelling.
I'm also intending to give him a second close combat arm, but they're a pain to find cheaply, so it will need to wait until I've got some spare cash.

In other news I'll be running my first ever 1750 point list tomorrow with a few friends. I'll be facing off against either a Space Marine, Imperial Guard or a Tyranid force. Up to now I've only ever run a 1000 point army, so its been fun having that extra 750 points to play with. I'm pretty much representing every one of the Chaos Gods, but that's the benefit of playing a Chaos Undivided army. I'll be looking at playing something along the lines of the list below:

So I Think I'm Hooked

Weeks of people sat around the office talking about getting back into 40k has finally swayed me into starting it up myself.

It's been around 4 weeks since I started playing and I'm now at around 2000 points of Chaos Space Marines. Not too bad for a month (probably why I'm broke though).

What I shall be doing is keeping this updated with my current collection. Providing pictures of my finished (and work in progress) models, as well as detailing possible lists I'll be looking to play.

I'm not in this for competitive play, as I'll be spending most of my time painting. But any games I do play will be detailed on here too.

So to start things off, I present you with my current project.

I got bored at work this morning so decided to assemble him there and then. He is a loyalist Dread, but since they're much cheaper (although I got this one free) and look way better than the terrible CSM version, I will be converting him to Chaos. He may end up getting a full Khorne paint job even.

Well, that's that. I shall update this again with pictures of the rest of my models once I can.
